Lauren Bessey (b. 2003) is an American-Australian photographer and artist based between Naarm (Melbourne) and New York City.
Lauren focuses her work around the female and queer gaze, the intersection between nature and self, and the exploration of culture. She finds that creating art allows her to gain a greater understanding of herself and the situations surrounding her. Her love of the visually-pleasing, alongside tangible artworks, has shaped her methods and practice – she prefers analogue photography and fabrication methods. Lauren also enjoys simply documenting her life and friends through photography and art.
Lauren is currently a senior at New York University, studying a BA in Global Liberal Studies with a concentration in Critical Creative Production, and minors in Integrated Design & Media and Studio Art. Alongside this, she is working as a Creative Production Assistant at creative agency and production studio, ALT-HOUSE, under the direction of photographer Jess Brohier.
From living and learning in Melbourne, Florence, New York, and Berlin, Lauren’s work, thoughts, and processes have been shaped by a global perspective and passion for travel and culture. Upon graduation, Lauren hopes to return to Naarm and seek work and further study there. She aims to contribute to the growing Australian arts industry and hopes to help undo some of the effects of Tall Poppy Syndrome in her home country.
Lauren is open to collaboration, work, internships and other exciting opportunities within the creative industry worldwide. Please feel free to reach out and connect!
